why do we not have educated politicians before answering the question one must know there is a difference between literacy and education in India you can spot a literate person easily but you will find it hard to spot an educated person I think this question asks for literate.
It is believed that since the population is not literate that’s why we do not have educated politicians but this is not the case when we are struggling for Independence just after Independence we have leaders such as Jawahar Lal Nehru, Sardar Patel and now we have Amit Shah and Narendra Modi whose degree is itself in controversy even after having 74.04% literacy rate we are not getting the politician that a literate nation needs or more or less we are returning to the medieval age without any rule of law.
So, literacy is definitely no reason for an uneducated politician so what are the reasons, I think the following are the reasons:-
- Role of caste and communal politics:- Due to caste and communal politics people prefer their leader from their caste or religion to get elected and ultimately they prefer voting for uneducated people from their caste instead of being educated from another religion or caste.
- Criminalization of Politics:- Earlier educated leaders used to wield influence through their muscle men but with time these muscle men took the place of their leader and with the help of a few corporates they captured the political landscape of the nation.
- Role of Economic Reforms:- These reforms propelled the growth of the urban middle class which is not aware of their fundamental rights, avoid protests, easily got intimidated by the ruling class, and was gullible enough to believe mass media.
What India needs is people who move around in rural and urban areas, understand the things which people need, and where the shoe pinches.
It's then up to them to take it across to the bureaucracy to work out people-friendly schemes which improve the happiness of the people. The laws should be simple, easily understandable, and easy to comply with.
At present most of our laws are contrary to the needs and desires of the common man. Hence the confusion and so much litigation.
We need politicians who are down to earth, easily accessible, and who can take the issues of the people to the govt and parliament.
We need good honest and down-to-earth politicians rather than highly educated ones
This is one of the most dreadful facts of our constitution and that always hurts you when you seriously think about this. There are constitutions in Europe and America where the minimum education is mandatory for politicians and especially for the person who is up for the president or prime minister’s post. Though in India 80% of the politicians are not even graduates and only a select few are actually post-graduates or have professional qualifications like MBA or IIT. The current Defense minister Manohar Parikar is an IIT graduate and current Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal is also an IIT graduate are just very few examples.
This entire scenario is two aspects of the same coin. That means, only educated or qualified politicians don't need to be good for the society or country. There are many ministers in the past who have done some great work for the country and they are not even graduates. Therefore, it completely depends on the person to person.
Education is not really a restraint in taking the right decision in politics for social welfare and it does means that since someone is highly educated or qualified then he/she will not be involved in any scam or corruption scandal. I think corruption is the biggest evil in our political system and constitutional system and it has nothing to do with education. I think what is more important here is not the academic education, but the contextual education and the moral education, and then only this country could become a more happy and more great place to live.
